Apple Photos Export to Windows: Photo Date Guide

Fix My Photo Dates is not an Apple Photos extension and does not connect to the Apple Photos library. It works with photo files you've exported or copied to Windows. That makes it useful for checking dates before another import, but it does not alter the source library on your Mac, iPhone, or iPad.

First, check what the export contains

Photo date behavior can depend on the export options and file. An exported image may contain an EXIF capture date, and the copied file also has Windows filesystem timestamps. Check both fields on a few representative images before a large repair. An edited or converted file may not have the same metadata as its original.

Important Apple Photos limit

Changing metadata on an exported image does not retroactively update the existing Apple Photos library entry. If you import a repaired copy later, the result depends on the new import and how Apple Photos interprets that file.

Why Date Created might say today

When a photo is copied to a Windows drive, the new file can receive a creation timestamp for the destination copy. That value is not proof that the picture was taken today. If the embedded EXIF capture date is intact, a photo app that reads that field may still display the original date.

When is a Windows date repair useful?

Repair can help when a target workflow relies on filesystem timestamps, or when reliable evidence exists to restore missing or incorrect embedded capture metadata in the exported file. The app shows the proposed value and its source so you can verify it before writing.
