A photo can remember when it was captured and also record when a copy of the file was created on your computer. Those timestamps can disagree without either one being technically broken.

What does “Date Taken” mean?

For many camera photos, Date Taken is read from capture-time metadata embedded in the image. In JPEG files, applications commonly use EXIF fields such as DateTimeOriginal. The camera's clock and timezone settings matter: embedded metadata can be absent or incorrect too.

What does “Date Created” mean on Windows?

Date Created is a filesystem timestamp for this particular file on this drive. When a photo is downloaded or copied to another device, the destination copy can have a newer creation date even while the image's EXIF capture date remains unchanged.

Quick distinction

EXIF capture date describes the image's recorded capture time. Windows creation date describes a file-system event. The modified date is another separate field and may behave differently depending on how a file is copied or edited.

Why can my photo app show a different date?

Photo apps choose their own rules for display and sorting. One view may show embedded capture time; a file manager may sort by creation or modified time. Check the app's sort option and compare its displayed date with the photo's metadata before changing anything.

Which date should I change?

Start with the app where you want the timeline corrected. If it reads EXIF capture time, changing only Windows Date Created may not affect the displayed date. If the photo's capture metadata is missing or wrong, and you have reliable evidence for the correct date, updating EXIF may help. For file searches and sorting in Explorer, filesystem timestamps may be the relevant fields.

How Fix My Photo Dates helps

The Windows app scans a folder and shows the detected date, its source, confidence, and proposed target before you apply a repair. It can update selected filesystem date fields, supported EXIF date fields, or both. You choose which files and date fields to change; it doesn't silently reorganize or upload your photo library.

Keep an original backup

Date repair changes metadata in place when selected. The app keeps a local rollback record for supported saved values, but that is not a full backup of every original file.

Frequently asked

Does copying a photo always change its Date Taken?

No. A file copy may get a new filesystem creation date while preserving the embedded EXIF capture date. Transfer tools and export settings can behave differently, so check the resulting fields.

Can I fix a photo date without changing the image?

The app's date repair writes metadata and does not intentionally alter image pixels. Make a backup of important files before making in-place metadata changes.
